Opened New Year’s Eve, 1 OAK is sexy, one-of-a-kind nightlife experience for partygoers designed by Toronto-based Munge Leung, featuring intriguing artwork by Roy Nachum. Meanwhile, Villas 9 and 10 at the Mirage were remodeled by Las Vegas-based Cagley & Tanner Design. These new villas combine a series of modern interventions, juxtaposed with traditional architectural detailing. This aesthetic bestows a sense of tradition and privilege, while the modern touches and vibrant punches of luxurious fabrics make the spaces feel fresh and exciting. Industries outside of hospitality have started to recognize this—companies such as Wal-Mart, Patagonia, Whole Foods and PNC Bank—and the awareness within our industry is growing. This panel will look at examples from these other industries and help answer the question of where is “green” going as is relates to FF&E, what metrics exist in hospitality to measure it, who is doing the measuring, and who is paying attention. This panel discusses what legitimate third-party tools exist now to measure how green a supplier (service or product oriented) may be, and what hurdles the industry has overcome as it relates to “green washing.” The panel furthers the conversation to include what direction the brands (such as Marriott and others) are heading into, how it affects their customer base, and what the owners can benefit from by being a participant. Examples will be given from Patagonia, Whole Foods, and PNC Bank specifically and then panel members will be asked how they believe hotels can achieve similar results through the renovation process.
